Cleaner Water Helps Male Fish Again
I honey having aquariums and I enjoy giving tips on how to maintain them.

If you cull to go with live plants, you will discover that over a yr or two, your aquarium will accomplish a steady land of being, ecologically.
Keep Fish Tank H2o Crystal Clear
I often get questions about how to keep a fish tank clearer for a longer flow of time. Let's face it: H2o changes can be tedious, messy, and fourth dimension-consuming. Caring for my own aquariums, I have gone from the dip-the-cup method to the siphon-into-the-bucket method to the Python hose method, which connects direct to a faucet or spigot to drain, siphon, and fill up. In my opinion, the latter is the least fourth dimension-consuming and messy. But wouldn't it exist great to go two to three months in betwixt water changes (instead of one calendar month) without harming the fish and livestock in your aquarium?
This isn't easy—at offset. Your aquarium must be prepared for the change. All of these elements play a office in the cleanliness of your aquarium:
- Filtration
- Decorations
- Fish residents
If y'all do your enquiry and follow the general guidelines here, you will be able to aid your aquarium accomplish a steady state of being, giving yous an ecosystem that can survive with minimal maintenance.

All types of filters—submersible, hang-on, and external—are cracking choices. Pick one that is like shooting fish in a barrel to apply and that will be nearly practical for your aquarium.
1. Filtration
Here is what you need to keep in mind near filtration.
Considerations When Choosing a Filter
First, let's talk nigh the filtration arrangement in your aquarium. Iii primary factors demand to work together to continue an aquarium clean:
- Chemical: Carbon, charcoal, and zeolite can catechumen toxins in the water chemistry.
- Mechanical: Cotton or cream cartridges that physically remove debris from the h2o.
- Biological: Nitrate-forming and nitrite-forming bacteria are produced by fish waste, and a good residuum of both is vital to a salubrious aquarium.
When choosing a filter, there are many different types of filters to choose from:
- Submersible
- Hang-on
- External
All are groovy choices. Pick one that is easy to use and that will be virtually practical for your aquascape environment.
Information technology is ideal to choose a filter at least one size bigger than the tank'due south capacity. For example: If you have a 55-gallon aquarium, yous would need a filter for a 60–75-gallon aquarium, and preferably with a substantial carbon media and leaner bed.
Installing Your New Filter
The mechanical part of the filter tin can be inverse at whatever time, but the chemical and biological filters need a break-in period so they can perform as expected. When y'all go ready to upgrade your filter, y'all desire to put the new filter on your aquarium for at least three weeks with the old one still in place. This gives the new filter time to build its own bacteria bed and the charcoal and carbon time to activate.
You also need to brand certain your chemicals are adapted appropriately, meaning your nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia levels demand to exist stable. At that place are cheap tests bachelor to perform this test. If the levels are out of residuum, I apply Stress Coat (a chlorine reducer) and Stress Zyme (a bacteria booster to aid the process along), but simply fourth dimension can ensure stability for your aquarium. Once yous are sure your water is rubber, you tin remove the old filter.

If you like the idea of plants with your African Cichids, plant the beast well before yous add the fish to ensure proper rooting.
two. Decorations and Environs
If your aquarium gets dirty very quickly and is difficult to make clean, the type of décor you have in your tank might exist calculation to the trouble. Some types of décor demand more frequent care than others. Plastic plants, rocks, and other knick-knacks will need to be cleaned periodically, while river rocks and alive plants don't need to exist cleaned as often.
Besides, consider whether your choice of décor is advisable for your fish. Practise your décor items contribute anything of value to your fish or are they purely aesthetic? I prefer natural environments and accept live plants in all of my aquariums (nine total, currently). Hither are some advantages to a natural aquascape:
- Plants assistance your water quality in more ways than y'all think. The plants aid convert the nitrites into nitrates. Some fish, like guppies, Affections Fish, and Discus, for example, need to be in an environs with alive plants and a steady period of water.

Angel fish like this one thrive in flowing, planted environments.
- The carbon dioxide emitted from fish waste is plant food for the plants, just similar humans animate carbon dioxide into the air aids photosynthesis by copse and plants on the earth. Angelfish, for example, like the long flowing leaves of sure plants and do not swallow them. This helps go on the water to stay cleaner longer.
- Some fish require a rocky mesa, while others prefer a sandy bottom or a planted ecosystem.
- African cichlids need many hiding places, and the more rocks y'all have, the amend the cichlids will get along. It is not usual to take alive plants in a cichlid aquarium, just many other fish do bask munching down on fresh plant life, then do your research on what fish likes to eat what nutrition. I have plants in my African cichlid aquarium, but I planted the beast long before I added the fish. If plants have fourth dimension to root and become settled, fish aren't as probable to dig them upwardly or eat them.
- South American cichlids, even so, prefer a mangrove-type environment for proper spawning areas and protection.

Aquariums with decorations similar castles crave more frequent cleaning than those with rocks.
If you are determined about keeping plastic plants and decorations in the tank, y'all volition need to clean the algae build up off equally it becomes necessary. Clean buckets and fresh hot water and a scrub brush designated solely for cleaning can rid the décor of unsightly algae. With live plants, you will find fewer algae in the tank, though.
3. The Right Type of Fish for Your Aquarium
In that location are many species of fish to choose from.
- Cold water varieties like goldfish, carp, and koi.
- Tropical species include African cichlids (three different lakes in Africa give us a cute selection and come closest to providing the colors that saltwater fish exercise).
- Due south American cichlids come in an array of sizes and have an iridescent yet graceful display.
- Tetras come from different regions of the world and are easy to mingle together.
- Gouramis, mollies, platies, guppies, barbs, sharks and catfish are among the numerous varieties of customs fish (with unlike levels of aggression).
Rule of Pollex
The rule of thumb is to accept one individual fish per 1 gallon of water for a salubrious size ratio in your tank. I personally like to have more fish and a bigger filter. Then, I can usually go away with having 1 fish per gallon. It's of import to stock the aquarium safely for the fish and appropriately for the species you may have.
- Some fish like to swim in alkali metal water, and some adopt a softer h2o environment. Test your tank'due south pH levels for sensitive fish such as neon tetras, angelfish, and discus.
- Tropical or freshwater fish alive and eat in various areas of the world and dissimilar levels of water depth. Brand sure your fish are compatible with each other, or y'all will accept carnage and dead fish clouding up the h2o.
- African and South American cichlids require different aquarium décor and have different h2o needs than guppies, mollies, or tetras. They are much more aggressive than goldfish and gouramis.

A variety of foods helps maintain your fishes' color, growth, and overall health.
iv. Feeding Your Fish for a Clean Tank
How you feed your fish too plays a office in how piece of cake is it to go along your aquarium make clean. Different fish have different diets: some eat other fish, some eat veggie diets, and there is a wide diversity of flakes and pellets to go along your fish from starving to death.
Providing your fish with a variety of foods helps maintain their color, growth, and overall health. Call up: The more than you feed them, the more they poop. But feed them what they can consume in two minutes, and there volition exist less waste. This will reduce the amount of ammonia in the water. Ammonia turns h2o a murky yellowish-brown color.
End Issue: A Steady State of Being
If you lot are like me, once you lot take your tank filter, decorations, fish population, and feeding routine simply the way you like it, you will rearrange your aquarium several times before being satisfied with the fashion it looks. Try not to stress your fish past moving them for two to 3 months, and y'all will observe your aquarium stays cleaner longer.
If you choose to go with live plants, you lot volition find that over a year or two, your aquarium will attain a steady state (this should be every enthusiasts' goal!). A steady country means that the chemistry of the water in your aquarium is changing slowly if at all. Think of it this fashion: If your electricity failed and you could not use the filter in your aquarium for a year, the counterbalanced combination of plants and fish would filter the water on its own. The only cleaning you would have to practise would be to clean the algae off the sides of the glass and change the water four times a year.
I hope you have establish this helpful and time-saving so you take more time to enjoy your aquarium instead of maintaining it. Enjoy and thanks for reading!

My gilt fish tank very cloudy at all time how maintain water clearity
FishLover on May 28, 2019:
This data is completely incorrect for goldfish. A common or comet goldfish (single tail) requires a bare minimum of xl gallons then 20 gallons for each additional goldfish. Fancy goldfish (bigger tail) require 20 gallons per fish and 10 gallons for each additional fish. Koi fish are not aquarium fish, they are pond fish. Commons and comets should be in a pond as adults... people are and so misinformed about these fish.

I just got a new 65 gln aquarium and I take koi in it. I just had it for a week now and the h2o is greenish and murky. I tin can't go it clean. I did a 25% water change and added a clarfier but information technology merely looks awful. I read about filters needing to cycle, how long can I expect this water to await like this and is it safe for my fish? I accept 3 live plants and iii structures.

My beta aquarium never had a problem with algae until we added live plants. They made the tank then dingy that I had to get rid of them. I would recommend sticking to plastic plants if you don't desire to clean as often.
